Watering

Not sure the formatting for this wiki so just some info as I've just found this seed and started growing it:

  • I found 5 shoots by digging up an artifact spot, next to the river, in the southern town screen, northeast of the shop.
  • I planted them late at night on Spring 12 so I can't say much for the appearance, but I did water them.
  • They were placed next to the small water hole (I have the new 4 corners map) as suggested by the tool tip, and the next morning appeared irrigated. When watered, no visible change happened. This suggests that they do not need watering. I will leave one alone and water the other four just in case and see if there is a difference.

will update... --Coranax (talk) 16:47, 27 November 2019 (UTC)

I am trying to add a drop source for the Rice Shoot, but I think Infobox seed does not accept a source field; it does not show up when I try. TheBlackOne (talk) 22:38, 28 November 2019 (UTC)

I'll put that on my "to do" list, it's a good idea. For now, follow what the Mixed Seeds page does, and just put the info into the text on the page. margotbean (talk) 23:05, 28 November 2019 (UTC)

Body of Water

Hmm. Does planting rice shoots near a fish pond fulfill the "body of water" requirement for growth and watering? Butterbur (talk) 18:54, 29 November 2019 (UTC)

Nope. I believe the page has already been updated to specify farm ponds, and not wells or fish ponds. margotbean (talk) 19:00, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
I think I was the one who specified that, but forgot the new fish ponds at the time. Then the question occurred to me. It should be verified. I would not expect wells to affect the growth, as they are not really "bodies of water", just water sources. However, who ever said real-life always applies? Butterbur (talk) 20:09, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
Ah, well I tested in-game and fish ponds and wells don't water the shoots, so we're good. By the way, I read that last sentence as "apples" and not "applies". It may be time for a break. margotbean (talk) 20:20, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
Thanks much! And I know just how you feel. :) Butterbur (talk) 23:29, 29 November 2019 (UTC)

I did some experimenting and found out that the river on the Hill-Top farm and parts of the ocean on the Beach Farm also count as a body of water for rice irrigation (not just farm ponds). I didn't edit the main page because I don't know the best way to word this to exclude fish ponds and wells. "Natural bodies of water" maybe? Xantres (talk) 19:27, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

Distance from water

Looks like rice shoots can grow further than 3 tiles away from a source of water. I planted some near the pond on the standard farm, including some 4 tiles away (I just picked some tiles that were free). It's half-way through spring now (think I planted them Spring 2) and the hover-info with UI Info Suite says they are 3 days away from being harvestable. The text in the article that mentions "within 3 tiles" may therefore need to be updated. See for an example. The rice I planted closer to the pond have already been harvested. Pangaea (talk) 16:58, 13 December 2019 (UTC)

They grow faster if irrigated (i.e., planted within 3 tiles of water), but they grow anywhere on the farm if you water them. Are you saying you haven't watered them and they're still growing? margotbean (talk) 17:23, 13 December 2019 (UTC)
I was going to reply with yes, but actually no. I have not watered them, but now I suddenly recalled that there have been a few days of rain and thunder, so that must be the explanation they have progressed five days. Pangaea (talk) 18:35, 13 December 2019 (UTC)
In 13 days, 5 with rain? Your farm is in a green and pleasant land! I could wish for a good irrigation system on mine. It's much sparser in this arid plain! Last year I had only one day of rain in all of Spring - not for the first time. Butterbur (talk) 06:07, 14 December 2019 (UTC)
Haha, yeah it suddenly got very wet. Other times I've gone through nearly a whole season without a single rainfall. The weather in Stardew Valley can be odd. Pangaea (talk) 16:10, 14 December 2019 (UTC)
Hmmm, are we sure that it isn't possible to slowly grow despite not getting water? The plants were at 1 day left when I fired up the game again, and it didn't rain that day, nor today. I finally went to pick up the water can to water them because it's the 27th and I figured I may as well get them the last stretch. But now it was possible to harvest them, without any water. These are the plants from the picture above, four tiles from the pond. I'm a little puzzled by the whole thing tbh. Pangaea (talk) 22:28, 14 December 2019 (UTC)
Sometimes it's more than the weather that's a little odd. This quirk definitely piques the curiosity. Sure all that rain didn't leave some puddles behind? ;) Transient paddies? Butterbur (talk) 23:33, 14 December 2019 (UTC)

Shoots from Drops

Margot, re your investigation into shoots obtained from monster drops: I recently got 1 shoot from a monster drop in the standard mines, between levels 13 and 20, on 8 Spring year 1. Don't remember which monster or exact level. Actually, can't guarantee it was a monster, either, but if not, then I picked it up harvesting rock or something. Butterbur (talk) 17:43, 26 January 2020 (UTC)

Thank you!!!!!!!!! That is extremely helpful, because I haven't had time to play the game since Thanksgiving! margotbean (talk) 18:11, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
Its grubs that drop them iirc. I will grab the % from monsterInfo when I get time. BlaDe (talk) 19:33, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
Yep, it's in Monsters.xnb and on the Grub page as well. (oops!) I assume it applies to Mutant Grubs as well, but not sure. Still don't know if it's ever a special drop or can be found in crates and barrels/boxes... :D margotbean (talk) 19:41, 26 January 2020 (UTC)

Irrigated Tile Maps

Hi! I'm working on making some maps of all irrigated tiles for each of the farm types. I have the image files, but I'm not sure how to add them to the page or if I have the correct permissions as a new user. Is anyone available to help with this? Thanks a bunch! Xantres (talk) 00:52, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

I've added a "Maps" section to the page. You should be able to follow the format for the other farm types' images. Post back if you have questions! margotbean (talk) 01:03, 14 January 2021 (UTC)
Is the irrigation mechanic the same for Taro Tubers? These images might be helpful on that page too. I'd assist with a map of irrigated tiles on the Ginger Island farm, but I have no idea how you made these images, lol. Efarn (talk) 03:22, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
Good catch! Thanks for pointing this out. I will work on this in the next week or two and update the Taro Tubers page directly. Xantres (talk) 19:27, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
As promised, I added additional maps directly to Taro Tubers page and Ginger Island page. Taro Tubers and Rice Shoots are irrigated exactly the same. I did not include the Ginger Island irrigation map on the Rice Shoots page because it is a spoiler, but I included a description on the file that it can be used for Taro or Rice. Thanks again! :) Xantres (talk) 02:24, 23 January 2021 (UTC)
Return to "Rice Shoot" page.
