Mining vs. Collecting

I think it's a matter of interpretation as to what constitutes "mining" rather than "collecting". It is clear, however, that you don't have to get your copper ore in the mines in order for the game to trigger Clint's arrival. I just started a new game in which I dug up an artifact that proved to be 3 copper ore, on day 1. Clint arrived on the morning of day 2. I would guess that what's important is that you get the ore by using a tool, and it doesn't matter where (mine was at the bus stop), nor does it seem to matter which tool (I used the hoe). I can't quite imagine how else you'd get ore, but my experience is evidence that the "collecting" can be interpreted as widely as I would ordinarily think possible.

I do admit, it was a surprise when Clint showed up then. But I think the article's clearer if I reverse the edit. Butterbur (talk) 15:35, 16 June 2017 (BST)

Thanks, B. If you look through the page history, this edit has been made and undone a couple of times already. I'm going to add a sentence explaining how the game code looks at it.  :) margotbean (talk) 22:28, 16 June 2017 (BST)
If you're referring to this sentence - "(Note: It does not matter where or how you obtain the copper ore, only that you take one into inventory.)" - I deleted it because it is inaccurate. After carrying copper ore I obtained from fishing treasure for days and days without getting the cutscene I checked the Steam forum and confirmed that ore from fishing chests will not trigger it. I finally got the cutscene to trigger after obtaining ore from the mine, but I'm not sure if that is the only source that works. --Amiety (talk) 08:29, 10 July 2017 (BST)
"The only ore that works must come from the mine" is the gist of the edit I reversed originally, because it is not accurate either. As I said in the first paragraph here, I dug some up with a hoe from an artifact spot on day one and that worked. I can't say just what the whole picture is, but I suspect that there is more to the circumstances than meets the eye. (Again) My experience occurred on day one: so the mines weren't open yet. Does that have some significance? When did you fish? Before the mines were open, or after? Does it matter? Do reports on Steam give these details? We've all done a bit of reasonable guess-work to get the story right, but we're obviously not there yet. Sometimes it's not correct to over-generalize our observations, even reading the code. But if this information bit changes again, editors should be careful to confirm game behavior through as many avenues as possible. We should suspect that there's a reason there have been reversals in the past. People have had questions about what's been written regarding copper needed to fulfill Clint's quests also, with some conflicting reports. Has game behavior changed a little between revisions? Platforms? Are there any subtle bugs? Let's try to make reports as complete as possible: version, platform, game date, anything we suspect could influence the outcome. Butterbur (talk) 16:16, 10 July 2017 (BST)
I already made the edit, but copper ore from any source may work. There are stipulations though -- it must be collected off the ground, just like mined ore and tilled ore is. So, you may buy a single piece of ore from Clint, drop it on the ground, collect it back, and the cutscene will trigger the next day. I tested this on day 1 and it triggered on day 2 -- I think I tried earlier on day 2 and it would not trigger on day 3, I'm not sure why. I didn't include that bit in the edit because I haven't been able to figure out why. It may have something to do with the guaranteed rain being scripted on Wednesday.--Auhfel (talk) 02:00, 13 March 2018 (UTC)
So, referring back to the steam forum entry presented earlier, I wonder: if you get the ore from fishing (via a treasure chest), drop it on the ground, and then retrieve it, will that trigger the cutscene? I'd lay odds it would. Butterbur (talk) 14:48, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
I'm willing to bet it probably would as well. --Auhfel (talk) 20:13, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
