Plural of Octopus

For what it's worth, user "One More Day" is right that "octopus" comes from Greek, not Latin, and the plural form is definitely not "octopi", in Greek, that is. However, please consult an English dictionary. "Octopi" is one of several accepted plurals for "octopus" in English.

In fact, "octopus" is not exactly the singular of the Greek word for the animal, either. That would be οκτάπους (oktapous) or χταπόδι (chtapodhi).

English is well known to incorporate many foreign plurals - for example, from Latin, "data" (plural of "datum"), and from Greek, "criteria" (plural of "criterio" in Greek, "criterion" in English).

With "octopus" already an anglicization of the Greek, which also looks like it has a Latin ending, some people no doubt got confused and made common errors in the ordinary plurals, and over time, those also were accepted. My guess is that it happened one to three hundred years ago, when (among literate English speakers), Latin and Greek were also known fairly widely, at least to some degree, but not always very thoroughly. Difficulty

While incredibly rare, I wouldn't consider it too difficult. I was easily able to catch it with a trap bobber at only level 8 fishing skill. It's still probably harder than the easier legendary fish.
