Categories

Can anyone list all the different 9 categories that the page implies? This ones I know so far:

  • Forage
  • Veggie
  • Flower
  • Fish
  • Mineral
  • Artifact ¿?

--EstebanLB (talk) 14:03, 30 March 2016 (EDT)

Someone on Reddit listed the items from each categories. Can someone make a dropdown lists containing all the categories listed here: https://www.reddit.com/r/StardewValley/comments/4d1ax6/grange_display_demystified/
I'm new to this, so I can't do it myself, you can teach me if you want c:--Thebluestyx (talk) 10:20, 2 April 2016 (EDT)
I almost feel like the item categories could go into a whole new page in itself, and we could just link to there, unless the categories used in judging are unique to the grange display contest's event for whatever reason. In that case, I think that collapsible tables, like the schedules on most villagers' pages, would be fine. Zornor (talk) 11:03, 2 April 2016 (EDT)
Things that I have noticed are:
  • Minerals = Gems + Minerals in the wiki table (why are they separated anyway?)
  • Cooking = Cooking + life elixir & oil of garlic (I'm not sure why)
  • Animal products = all produce in animal's page - dinosaur egg - truffle (truffle doesn't have a category in the tooltip, dinosaur egg is an artifact in the tooltip)
Then my eyes gave up. RIP eyes.--Thebluestyx (talk) 11:26, 2 April 2016 (EDT)
Gems and minerals are separated because gems are generally liked by villagers as gifts while minerals are disliked.--Metalax (talk) 08:33, 5 April 2016 (EDT)

Slingshot Game

Having trouble playing the minigame properly? Zoom out to 80% or so! The game likes to be a tad TOO zoomed in sometimes when at 100%, cutting the top and bottom off. Just found this fix out when trying to do it myself and getting frustrated. Hope this helps! —FerreTrip (talk) 22:12, 15 April 2016 (EDT)

Bug

"-the following you can do in the buggy area behind Gus- If you go north to the Playground, behind it at the forward facing cliff behind the right tree. If you right click the cliff from the left side, a window will appear in which it says" please stand at the red arrow". What it means is unknown. The same message can be obtained if you stand above the JoJaMart and facing a cliff again."

That's the message you get at the Smashing Stone strength game. Presumably there's some kind of bug/glitch where the same message is triggered here. I'm not really sure if this is noteworthy enough to stay in the article though.--Enkidu (talk) 20:06, 22 October 2016 (BST)

Maximum score

The maximum score listed does not add up. The article says that you can get (14 + 45 + 9 +30) and then gives a total of 125. Those numbers add up to 98, not 125. The maximum score is correct, calculated from the base (14) + 9 for full display + 30 for six categories represented + (Iridium items valued at 400+ at the listed value of 8, multiplied by 9 slots equals) 72. Someone just forgot to change the 45 to a 72 when the maximum changed to 125, I assume due to the introduction of Iridium items.

Can someone please verify my calculations and fix the page? I have some weird talent whereby whenever I make changes to wikia pages, something goes wrong and they get messed up.

GlassDeviant (talk) 22:28, 25 December 2016 (UTC)

Shoot, I messed up. Fixed now. --BryghtShadow (talk) 02:00, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

Uncategorised items

From what I can tell, sea urchins and coral are uncategorised (expected I guess). Gold sea urchins give 6 and gold corals give 5. You do not get a category bonus for providing these items. (Although they still can be better given you only need 6 categories so e.g. if your top repeated category item is worth 5 then a gold sea urchin is better.)

I tested a gold coral by itself and got 12 which makes sense assuming there is no category bonus 14-7+0+5=12. Likewise a gold sea urching gave 13, again makes sense if it's worth 6 with no category bonus. A gold oyster gave 16, which concurs with the current version of the wiki. It's worth 4 plus a category bonus of 5 so 14-7+5+4. A gold coral, gold sea urchin and gold oyster gave 31. Again makes sense since 14-3+5+(5+6+4).

I replaced an item worth 5 (gold red mushroom) with gold sea urchin and got an extra point. (I already had other foraging items.)

Melon jelly gives 6 incidentally. And I think iron bars are 3 with no category bonus. (Get 10 by itself.)

Nil Einne (talk) 10:26, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

From what I can tell uncatigorized give no category bonus, and their normal bonus calculated by the chart below. This means that after 6 category bonus items, the 3 more can be from any category or no category items and you get full bonus. As a note, to get full 8 points you need iridium star level quality. However, if you have at least 6 categories and 6 points in every slot (even a no star item with 400+ value gets this) you get 93 points which is enough to win. Profession bonuses that give higher quality goods count towards the chart, ones that give more value for goods don't. --Ruedii (talk) 19:07, 26 July 2019 (UTC)

Iridium Vegetables

What's with the vegetable list, giving points ratings for iridium-quality vegetables? Most of those are crops, and crops aren't ever assigned iridium quality, are they? Butterbur (talk) 02:49, 14 April 2017 (BST)

No, crops are never iridium quality. The problem is with Template:FairPoints -- it doesn't allow for levels of quality, only a boolean value (quality = yes or no). I need to read up on arrayprint syntax before I can change it... Unless someone else wants to jump in and change it.  :) margotbean (talk) 04:24, 14 April 2017 (BST)
There is ONE forage class vegetable, which hence can be gotten at iridium quality. This is the fiddlerhead fern. Unfortunately, it is only 7 points, not 8. Still, it is one point higher than any other vegetable. Fruits have many more with both Tree Fruits and several forage fruits. However, salmonberries and blackberries are worth so little they are only 5 and 6 points respectively at iridium quality. You need Crystal Fruit or Coconut to meet the 8 point maximum. With the combination of Cockle for 7 points on fish and fiddlerhead fern for 7 points on vegetable, you can get your full points on all items. Still, it's worth noting that you can get a winning 90 point score with only 6 point goods provided you get 6 categories and fill all slots--Ruedii (talk) 20:13, 26 July 2019 (UTC)
This was about an old problem with a template, which reported points for iridium-quality crops. That bug has been fixed in the mean time. Butterbur (talk) 05:29, 27 July 2019 (UTC)

Outside the map differences

I was messing around outside the map using the out of bounds bug and noticed something that there are some differences strangely, for example the blacksmith's has no furnace outside and no minecart. I guess this may be because it is an old version of the map outside the festival? Another thing I found was that even though I have completed the community center it is still dilapidated, I also suppose this is because it is never visible and doesn't need to be changed for the festival.

Another thing I just noticed is that the fenced off area next to the community center is missing from this map too, don't know if all this should be added to the page or something. --Oworinge (talk) 10:28, 1 June 2017 (BST)

The game uses a unique map for the Fair - you can view it in its entirety by extracting Content\Maps\Town-Fair.xnb and then opening the file with a map editor like tIDE or Tiled. Although it's fascinating to discover in-game, I think it would fit better in the Modding section than on this page. margotbean (talk) 21:57, 1 June 2017 (BST)

RE: Fishing Minigame Bug

RE: "Bug: In the fishing fair-game, if you cast a very short distance (thus cancelling the cast), the game doesn't allow your character to move until you catch a fish. Because the cast was cancelled, this never happens, and you just stand there unable to move as the timer ticks down. Pressing Esc causes the timer to go to 0:00, which causes the game to be forever stuck in the minigame. This is a bug known on PC, but untested on other platforms."

Got this bug (or at least one very similar) while playing on the Nintendo Switch!

When I started the minigame, my character was facing forwards, and moving towards the pond didn't change the sprite and didn't use any walk animation. It just kind of slid across the screen (which was really freaky!!) I was able to catch a couple of fish, but then it stopped working altogether - I couldn't move, I couldn't cast the line, pressing buttons didn't work at all, and the character sprite was stuck in some weird hybrid between the regular fishing sprite and one of the frames from the fishing animation. The only thing that seemed to work was the timer, but when it eventually got to 0:00, nothing happened and I was forced to restart my game.

--BlueJayy (talk) 07:34, 23 November 2017 (UTC)

On Linux, a very short click from the bottom of the pool casts successfully. On an unrelated note, the spacebar or currently bound key won't work the way it does for fishing anywhere else.

Sobeita (talk) 00:24, 25 November 2017 (UTC)

On Windows 10 (game ver 1.3.36) there seeems to be a slightly similar bug - when you fish out trash or algae, you are no longer able to cast. You can still move around and press Esc to finish the minigame early. Happened after I had to kill the game after the first bug. I'm using Teh's Fishing Overhaul; dunno if it might be related, but I'm mentioning it just in case.

Mayome (talk) 14:01, 21 April 2019 (BST)

Mayonnaise

In the Artisan Goods table, 5 points are indicated for a silver quality Mayonnaise. Is silver quality even possible in Mayonnaise? Butterbur (talk) 20:09, 22 February 2018 (UTC)

No, there's no such thing as silver mayo. The problem is the same as before, scroll up a couple of headings and read "Iridium Vegetables". Template:FairPoints would need to be rewritten to fix. margotbean (talk) 16:53, 24 February 2018 (UTC)
Update: it's fixed now. margotbean (talk) 23:10, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

Spinning Wheel

After reading that the spinning wheel runs at about 75/25 odds (And my fishing mini-game is bugged), I decided to try to earn tokens through the wheel. After about 30 minutes I was still at about 150 tokens and didn't go up or down significantly in tokens over the course of about 100 rolls. I began to keep count of the rolls towards the end, and I got 15 on Green and 15 on orange. I'm not a math major, but the odds of that have to be extremely low if it's truly 75/25 odds. Has this been changed? Talekon (talk) 13:37, 14 May 2018 (BST)

EDIT: I didn't know you could get your grange display rewards without the festival ending. I had a lot better luck getting to 3400 with 1000 to start with. Talekon (talk) 13:51, 14 May 2018 (BST)

I can't find any changes in the code between v1.2 and v1.3.10, so, no, there haven't been any changes. margotbean (talk) 18:58, 14 May 2018 (BST)
I took a look at the game's source code using JetBrains' awesome decompiler, dotPeek. There is a lot of math involved but I noticed that the player's "luck level" is in some way involved in the calculations. I'm not an expert at the Stardew Valley source code, but I'd wager the "luck level" is the luck reported by the TV's fortune teller. I was playing this morning and I noticed that I, too, was hitting orange as frequently as green. I terminated the game and restarted the day, then checked the TV. The TV said my luck was very good, so I proceeded to try the wheel game again, where I easily got to 3400 tokens, hitting orange only once. --VisualCSharp (talk) 15:19, 12 January 2019 (UTC)
Game1.dailyLuck is the fortune teller; Game1.player.LuckLevel is unimplemented. As you read more of the code, you'll see that LuckLevel was supposed to act as a 6th skill that would be leveled up by digging up artifact spots, etc. margotbean (talk) 18:20, 12 January 2019 (UTC)

Kelly criterion calculation

Where f is fraction of bankroll, p is probability of win and b is betting odds

f = (p(b+1)-1)/b

We know that b=1 and p=0.75 so

f = (0.75(2)-1)/1 = 0.5

So we bet 0.5 of our bankroll, i.e. half

Attractions Table

I think that the attractions table doesn't look that great here. Tables are well suited for shop inventories, but not paragraph descriptions of how each attraction works. I find the column sorting is not very useful. The attractions themselves don't relate to each other that well: one has nothing to do with tokens, some have a cost, others don't. And the images cause a large amount of empty space. Could this be changed into normal paragraphs and page sections, similar to the Night Market?

Are people are worried that converting from a table to normal sections and paragraphs would make the page overly long? A dedicated page for the grange display point calculations would alleviate this. EthanPowers (talk) 05:35, 8 September 2018 (BST)

Feel free to create a sandbox page in your user space and play around with the formatting. It sounds like a solid idea, as long as the images are handled properly for both wide and narrow screens. margotbean (talk) 16:37, 8 September 2018 (BST)
Ah! I didn't realize that we had a public space to test changes. It makes a lot more sense that there's a sandbox for that type of thing. I'll work on it for a bit and see how it looks. We aren't too concerned about mobile displays here are we? Just narrower windows, correct? EthanPowers (talk) 21:20, 8 September 2018 (BST)
I think I got some decent options that would work. Take a look at my sandbox: User:EthanPowers/sandbox. I personally like option 3, but each has some downside. EthanPowers (talk) 04:42, 10 September 2018 (BST)
They look nice, but each one takes up more vertical space than the original, and we lose the ability to sort by name and price. margotbean (talk) 15:56, 10 September 2018 (BST)
I made some changes that might make you happier. It now takes up the same or less vertical space now than the official page (I see you removed some pictures there to condense the table space there since I started all of this). Sorting by attraction name is useful on the official page, but I accomplished that already by just ordering them alphabetically. I still never saw the use for sorting by price, since the booths have a wide range of rewards that are not related. I've made many SDV spreadsheets, but I've never even considered doing it for the booths. Have you found sorting by price useful here? EthanPowers (talk) 00:05, 15 September 2018 (BST)

Missing bug in the Bugs/Trivia section

If you go to the strength minigame and activate + cancel at the same time, your character becomes glitched out. I have only tested this glitch on the Nintendo Switch version, but I plan to try it on the PC version as well eventually.

This glitch has worked differently for me on the different times I've tried it, so I'm not sure what the exact result is supposed to be. Every time my animation has been glitched out and my movement speed slowed, but the animation glitch has happened in different ways. When I tried the glitch today, my character also got stuck facing in a certain direction and could only interact with things/people in that direction.

The glitch can be ended by talking to the shop guy in the north-west part of the fair area who lets you trade in star tokens.

As you can tell, I haven't done any extensive testing on this, I just was reading this article, noticed that this bug wasn't listed, and decided to create an account to point attention towards this. PatTheHyruler (talk) 07:53, 17 March 2019

Problem with an Artisan Goods table edit proposal

Because I don't know yet how to fix this problem, I have edited my sandbox instead to show my proposed new Artisan Goods table. The thing is that I can't get the item name to properly show. When trying to link the item's page (in this case, Honey), this shows:

Item Price Base Silver Gold Iridium
Honey.png [[Honey (Blue Jazz)]] Gold.png200g 4

The desired item name should be just "Honey (Blue Jazz)" and should not be "[[Honey (Blue Jazz)]]".

I don't know what to do in this case. I don't know how to make "[[" and "]]" not show. The only thing I can think is creating redirect pages based on the names (e.g. the pages "Honey (Blue Jazz)", "Honey (Fairy Rose)", etc. should just redirect to "Honey"). All I'm asking is permission to make all the redirect pages for the variable artisan goods (Honey, Jelly, Juice, Pickles, Wine). Other than that, any suggestions to fix this problem? KLaurence (talk) 11:59, 3 June 2019 (BST)

You want to use the "magic word" {{!}}, which gets turned into a pipe character in the template. Example:
{{FairPoints|Honey|name=Honey{{!}}Honey (Blue Jazz)|200|n}}
results in...
Item Price Base Silver Gold Iridium
Honey.png Honey (Blue Jazz) Gold.png200g 4
Jelly (Ancient Fruit) would be {{FairPoints|Jelly|name=Jellies and Pickles{{!}}Jelly (Ancient Fruit)|1150|n}}
Please comment back if any of this is unclear, or you need more assistance!
-- margotbean (talk) 18:32, 3 June 2019 (BST)
p.s. Don't forget to add entries in the table for jelly, pickles, honey, juice and wine sold by the traveling cart! Their sell prices should be listed on their individual pages. Thanks, margotbean (talk) 18:37, 3 June 2019 (BST)
Thank you very much! I have edited the page. There is not really much to add, except a note next to the "Honey (Wild)" slot which I didn't add yet because it looks like this:
Item Price Base Silver Gold Iridium
Honey.png Honey (Wild)<ref>Honey bought from the Traveling Cart also counts as Wild Honey.</ref> Gold.png100g 3
How do I make it show [1] instead? Thank you again in advance. KLaurence (talk) 03:10, 4 June 2019 (BST)
I think sending reference tags to the template is more than it can handle. Best solution, I think, is to add an asterisk to the entry (immediately after "(Wild)"), then just below the table put an asterisk with the note. (Be sure to put the asterisk inside <nowiki> tags, so it doesn't turn into a bulleted list.) There's an example in the table of Abigail's gifting dislikes. Again, comment back if you have no idea what I'm talking about!  :D margotbean (talk) 19:03, 4 June 2019 (BST)
Just realized that Oasis honey is the same as Traveling Cart honey, so perhaps you would add that to the note as well.  :D margotbean (talk) 21:02, 4 June 2019 (BST)
I've added it. My only concern with it is that it's the same color as the "Honey (Wild)" link which might not make it stand out. Is there a way to escape the link? KLaurence (talk) 01:19, 5 June 2019 (BST)
No easy way, no. It looks good, I think. In fact, all of it looks very nice. Well done! margotbean (talk) 01:31, 6 June 2019 (BST)
Thank you very much! Looking back though, I was not satisfied at the artisan goods just linking to their respective pages. I also want the item names inside the parentheses to go to their respective pages, like this:
Item Price Base Silver Gold Iridium
Honey.png [[Honey (Blue Jazz)]] Gold.png200g 4
(Note that clicking "Honey" on the table above will link you to the Honey page, while clicking "Blue Jazz" will link you to the Blue Jazz page)

The code regarding the problem is {{FairPoints|Honey|name=[[Honey{{!}}Honey]] [[Blue Jazz{{!}}(Blue Jazz)]]|200|n}}.
How can I hide the "[[" and "]]" around the links? Thanks! KLaurence (talk) 03:38, 6 June 2019 (BST)
There's no way to do it without some major changes to the template. I don't think it's absolutely necessary to link to individual fruits/flowers/veg, etc., when it's the artisan goods that matter, and the necessary info is either on the artisan goods pages or linked to from the artisan goods pages. I also think about modifying the template in 12 languages and cringe! margotbean (talk) 13:51, 6 June 2019 (BST)
Understood. Thank you very much for helping me regarding my edits! KLaurence (talk) 23:26, 6 June 2019 (BST)

Add trash items to table

Perhaps, trash items should be added to the points table? Some of the items considered trash (like Iridium Bars, Strange Dolls, and Pearls) sell for quite a lot and are definitely worth 6 points. These items may find a place in the grange display if there are already 6 unique categories used in the grange display. 4hrue (talk) 00:07, 12 June 2020

Trash gives no points in the grange display, other than avoiding the penalty for having empty spaces. margotbean (talk) 15:28, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
Trash does give points in the grange display, as can be seen in the attached screenshot (There are 6 pearls in the grange display, and I got a score of 77, 14 (base) + 9 (9 items) + 54 (6*9, for 9 pearls each worth 6 points) = 77. I do have mods installed, but mostly so I can fast-forward the date to Fall 16. --4hrue (talk) 19:07, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
So, you are completely correct! Mea culpa! However, the page is already very long with several collapsable elements, and I think the text I added will help people see that the sell price and quality will award points, even if the item(s) don't fit into any of the 8 categories. The existing section Sell Price & Quality provides the necessary info.
I'm going to go ahead and delete the screenshot, since it's been verified (thank you!), and it takes up 148KB of space. Thanks, margotbean (talk) 21:19, 20 June 2020 (UTC)

1.5 Random Shop Items

In 1.5 the shops were changed across the board for festivals, but in this particular case the things added aren't always the same. The ones another recorded and added here were a Glowstone Ring for 500 and 100 Hay for 1000. What I got instead was Light Green Rug for 500 and 24 mixed seeds for 1000. How do we display this? --Chaosstripe (talk) 19:03, 29 December 2020 (UTC)

I've split the section into "Fixed" stock and "Random" stock, and added the items you got. Feel free to continue to edit the section as items are discovered!
Also, to any code-readers, a complete list is always welcome.
Thanks for pointing this out, Chaosstripe! margotbean (talk) 19:17, 29 December 2020 (UTC)

Patch 1.5 Chances for the Spinning Wheel

Can someone look into if the chances modified? The strategy to always bet green seems to no longer work. --Zamiel (talk) 07:06, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
