Planting the Ancient Seed

Can this be planted or not? The page says it can be, but it doesn't work in game. Is there any other use for a 2nd ancient seed artifact, the sell price is very disappointing.

You need to give it to Gunther first, and then he'll give you an actual pack of seeds that you can plant. Don't worry about losing them. mycat (talk) 12:23, 14 August 2016 (EDT)

I know this is a 2nd artifact I found digging up worms, so it is useless and worthless then ?

When you get the artifact you can craft the ancient seed which you can plant by using the artifact. For me it's the 2nd page of the crafting window. --Jcoy42 (talk) 07:34, 1 December 2016 (UTC)

If you receive an additional Ancient Seed item, it can be turned into a plantable seed in your crafting menu with the recipe received from the museum donation. (Cabita (talk) 04:11, 2 February 2021 (UTC))

The Recipe

I'm running version 1.2 on a PC using Steam. The article speaks of a recipe that you get by donating the artifact to the Museum. I have always assumed that to be the recipe for crafting seeds (with a Seed Maker), turning a fruit into seeds. My experience on this game version is that this is not the case. I have as yet not found the artifact anywhere, so I have certainly not donated it. A game season back, though, I bought a plantable seed from the Traveling Cart and planted it in the Greenhouse, where it matured and produced my first fruit. So I tried putting the fruit into my Seed Maker, and out came seeds. Apparently, no recipe is required for that.

Reading the earlier comments on this page, it seems that some player in earlier game versions found multiple Ancient Seed artifacts, with replies that a Seed Maker can also turn those into plantable seeds. The implication is that the recipe is required for that activity, meaning that there's only one productive thing you can do with your first artifact, which is to donate it to the museum. That's fine, but I can't verify this idea about the recipe.

So my basic questions are: it's not a recipe for making seeds out of fruits, but a recipe for making seeds out of artifacts, right? But if not, then what? And has anyone else seen what I have, which should not be possible? Butterbur (talk) 20:44, 24 September 2017 (BST)

I find that the (implied) answer is buried on the Crops page under Ancient Fruit. It is indeed possible always to make (the plantable Ancient Seeds out of Ancient Fruit by using the Seed Maker. The recipe is simply for making Ancient Seeds out of Ancient Seed artifacts. I'm going to clarify this point on some relevant pages, so that the info does not remain so hidden.
