Sorting

Sorting by Health or Energy doesn't work properly, is there an easy way to fix that? Would be very useful. --Katiee (talk) 23:56, 28 February 2016 (EST)

Tried this: [1] but couldn't figure it out, where can I see the version of MediaWiki we are using? I'll look into this more tomorrow. --Katiee (talk) 00:20, 29 February 2016 (EST)
Found the version number, don't mind me.. --Katiee (talk) 00:22, 29 February 2016 (EST)

Not sure if you ever got sorting to work, but I was just looking at this as well. Maybe I just need a template primer, but I don't know how to make templates work with sorting. I actually don't know where the data on this page is coming from. None of the sorts (Energy/Health/Sell price) seem to work at all, anyone know how to fix it while still using templates? Starseeker (talk) 21:49, 21 January 2017 (UTC)

BryghtShadow created a couple of sandbox pages to try to fix it, but he/she didn't succeed, and hasn't been around for a week or so...
I tried myself (don't ask me how I traced all the way to the source template, I can't remember now and can't find it) but failed. margotbean (talk) 01:18, 22 January 2017 (UTC)
User:Lilly is working on a template to build the list from the individual pages infobox parameters. Since the template create the whole table, the sort-key could be added easily then. Fixing the current list would require adding the sort-key to every recipe page. --Vg-tal (talk) 04:54, 22 January 2017 (UTC)
I probably put too much thought into how the data could be stored/extracted (my attempt was storing into temp variables, which get passed onto the transcluding page). I didn't really get into fixing sorting because the currently implemented foundation of data storage/extraction is not solid. --BryghtShadow (talk) 13:03, 22 January 2017 (UTC)
I tried adding data-sort-value to individual recipe pages, but it didn't come through with the template... that's probably why you tried to use temp variables. If this wiki supported data-sort-type, it would fix a lot of tables that don't sort properly. Instead, we're twisting ourselves into knots trying to hack fixes that shouldn't be so difficult. Ah well... margotbean (talk) 22:18, 24 January 2017 (UTC)

Sorting on Health, Energy, and Sell Value is fixed. Vg-tal was right, adding data-sort-value to the original pages worked. The trick was to pad zeroes on the left, so all data-sort-values were 3 characters. I went through all 70 recipe pages TWICE, because I forgot Energy & Health the first time. I padded all data-sort-values to 4 digits on the 2nd pass, so no one will ever have to do this again. margotbean (talk) 01:11, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

FYI, I'm guessing mediawiki updates over the last three years have updated the tablesort version, because data-sort-type does now work. Not saying there's any need to go back and remove all the data-sort-values or zero-padding, but adding data-sort-type to templates/etc. would eliminate the need to remember to add data-sort-value to new entries (or maintain those values when making updates). Demo table:
With sort type Without
3+text 3+text
30 30
5 5
Nebulous Maestress (talk) 18:08, 7 April 2020 (UTC)
Actually, data-sort-type always worked, it just doesn't work on formatted numbers or text, so we would have to present the sell price without the price template and health/energy without the icons for it to work. I appreciate the tip, though. margotbean (talk) 18:48, 7 April 2020 (UTC)
Adding data-sort-type would at a minimum eliminate the need for zero-padded numbers. Nebulous Maestress (talk) 19:34, 7 April 2020 (UTC)

Game order?

Can we get it put back into the game order rather then alphabetical? This seems to be getting to be an issue with more pages lately- it's much easier to find the things you're missing if you go by game info, yet people are changing it to alphabetical when there's already options to sort it INTO alphabetical. I have added a Display column to the recipes table to allow sorting by game order. --Strom

Quality of ingredients

Does the quality of ingredients contribute to quality of the dish? --Imaginationac (talk) 04:14, 17 April 2016 (EDT)

Duration of food stats

Someone has been putting the duration of food in the wiki. I was going to do this a while ago but found that duration varies. I tried to see if there was a range but it appeared to be a really large range. Like escargot was sometimes 16 min like it says now in the wiki but at other times it was 3 mins.

So, I think the duration should be removed but we should put something on the page that discusses the duration. If it is completely random then we should say that. Or a range. Or quality of ingredients. I can do some real research on it but have come to conclusion, based on a small amount of research, is the following. All of these could be completely wrong and duration is totally random. 1) some foods will give a long duration sometimes while others never seem to give as long as 10 min or more. 2) ingredient quality doesn't seem to matter, so just use the cheapest. 3) Stat number may have an impact on duration. such as +3 might have a range of 1 min to 17 min. +2 has range of 1 min to 10 min. 3) If there is something that affects the duration it is unknown. Possibilities - using the same food more than x times in sequence, ingredients, etc.

All of the above needs research, or code reading.Kiriel (talk) 00:46, 9 May 2016 (EDT)

Ah, I am roy, who add duration time to foods. It seems there may some bugs here, same food sometimes have a different duration. But sometimes they are same. During my game playing, I found if eat some food before, it may be a interfere.

So we need more research, maybe

roy (talk) 11:55, 8 May 2016 (EDT)

It may be based on time or how many foods you have eaten. I have noticed that the times go down during the day. Some will have the same duration for a while and then later in the day go down. Some like the fish stew seem to go down each time I use it.

I put the time mod on and made the day 4x as long so I could eat more food. At 8am Fish Stew was 16min 50sec. I ate 8 Fish Stew during the day and saw the duration go down by a minute each time. Then I didn't eat Fish Stew but ate Trout Soup which also lost some duration. At 11:00pm I ate Fish Stew again and it was 1min 50sec. I am going to try this day by eating Fish Stew twice in the morning then no more food until 11pm and see what the Fish Stew is at that time. This might help to figure out if each food you each makes the duration of all foods go down or if it is related to number of foods you eat. Or if it is related to time of day. Kiriel (talk) 00:53, 9 May 2016 (EDT)

I don't know that very sure. And, of course if you want some special help, send me a letter to [email protected]. I'm glad to give you something special that may helps you a lot. A stardew valley official debug mode application. I have so many to do these months so there are no free time for me to play game.= = roy (talk) 03:28, 9 May 2016 (EDT)

It is really weird. I am coming to think that duration is based on the time of the day. I am going to do some testing in the next few days on this. It is really unfortunate if this is the case - for those that play with the time mode and lengthen the day. Night foods only last a few minutes. It may be that the developer felt that eating a food would give benefits for the rest of the day. So, if you eat a food in the morning it gives 16 minutes. If you eat that same food at 11pm it gives only 1 minute. I noticed that eating a food at midnight gives no benefits.

This is for the foods that last a long time. Some foods even when eaten at the start of the day only give 5 minutes or so. I don't know why this duration change was done. It seems like it would be easier to make a food have the same duration no matter what time you eat it and have it expire always when you sleep. Maybe it was done to thwart those who would mod to make a longer day. I'll write you about the debug mod. Kiriel (talk) 11:27, 10 May 2016 (EDT)

Also, I updated the cooking page to say that duration was most likely based on time of day. My calculations aren't working out exactly - yet - I tried using both 2am and midnight as the "end time" to see if duration of things like Fish Stew would last exactly to end of day and the durations are coming up after that. For example, at noon, it is 9.8 minutes to end of day (2am) but Fish Stew duration is 14 minutes. It gets closer towards the end of day but still not exact.

I thought maybe each food had some multiplier. Like Fish Stew would be 1 and you take number of real seconds to end of day, multiply by that and you get duration. Things Like Dish O' the Sea would have .2 or something as multiplier. This still could be true with Fish Stew having multiplier of 1.x....I am going to play around with it some more as I get more numbers. Kiriel (talk) 13:34, 10 May 2016 (EDT)

LOL. Waiting for your conclude. (ノ≧ڡ≦) its really a hard work.

Now I have to sleep. Its 2:45 now, really really late.(China,GMT+8)

Ahhh, if possible, give me your email address here. Remember I have something for u? You must love it. roy (talk) 14:43, 10 May 2016 (EDT)

Just to add I have noticed that eating food after midnight don't seem to give any effects (at least in the case of coffee) Kaori kins (talk) 13:20, 4 August 2019 (UTC)

Skill Buff Suggestion?

I think adding something under Stat Bonuses that directs players to the Proficiency page would be prudent, so players reading about foods don't have to search as hard as I did to find the effects of foods such as Pancakes, which of course decreases the energy usage of the related tool. I would add the edit myself, but I've just started learning how to edit wiki pages (first ever wiki edits were to a couple of recipes yesterday), and every time I try to format it, the page ends up looking funny. -Jouralto (talk) 08:35, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

Cooking for... how much profit?

I'm thinking of expanding on the section about profits (today or tomorrow), specifically listing exactly how profitable (or not) each recipe is (assuming lowest quality ingredients). But maybe that should just be an extra column on the big cooking table? AnorZaken (talk) 01:15, 21 July 2017 (BST)

OK, so after crunching the numbers it has become very clear that cooking for profit is almost always bad value. Only the Algae Soup and Pale Broth stand out because there is no better use of those ingredients. If you can use your ingredients in any other way (i.e. Beer, Mayo, Jelly, etc.) then you're better of doing that. (Unless your ingredient production exceeds your processing capacity I guess.)
Here are the raw numbers (sans any proper formatting):
Legend:
A: Angler profession (+50%)
B: Bought at store (what the bought item cost)
C: Crafted (what the crafted item sells for)
F: Fisher profession (+25%)
R: Rancher profession (+20%)
T: Tiller profession (+10%)

"Better to..." values are the values of the produced goods only - i.e. not including ingredient costs.
(I didn't bother because one can see right away how superior these options are anyway!)

Algae Soup:
100 - 4 * 15 = +40

Bean Hotpot:
100 - 2 * (40:T44) = +20 (T+12)
...
Better to make Pickles: 2 * (130:A182)

Blackberry Cobbler:
260 - 2 * 20 - 2 * (C50:B100) = +120 (B+20)
...
Better to make Jelly+Pickles+[Pickles or Beer]: 2 * (90:A125) + 0.33 * (250:A350) + [(100:A140) or (200:A280)]

Bread:
60 - (C50:B100) = +10 (B-40)
...
Better to make Pickles or Beer:(100:A140) or (200:A280)

Carp Surprise:
150 - 4 * (30:F37:A45) = +30 (F+2) (A-30)
...
Better to make Sashimi: 4 * 75

Chocolate Cake:
200 - 2 * (C50:B100) - (50:R60) = +50 (R+40) (B-50) (BR-60)
...
Better to make Mayo with just the egg: (190:R228:A266)

Eggplant Parmesan:
200 - 2 * (60:T66) = +80 (T+68)
...
Better to make Pickles: 2 * (170:A238)

Fruit Salad:
450 - 2 * (50:T55) - (250:T275) = +100 (T+65)
...
Better to make Jelly: 2 * (150:A210) + (550:A770)

Lucky Lunch:
250 - (75:F93:A112) - 50 - (50:T55) = +75 (T+70) (F+57) (FT+52) (A+38) (AT+33)
...
Better to make Pickles with just the corn: (150:A210)

Pale Broth:
150 - 2 * 25 = +100

Red Plate:
400 - (260:T286) - (90:T99) = +50 (T+15)
...
Better to make Pickles: (570:A798) + (230:A322)

Roots Platter:
100 - 25 - 70 = +5
...
Better to spend your time more wisely ;)

Spicy Eel:
175 - (85:F106:A127) - (40:T44) = +50 (T+46) (F+29) (FT+25) (A+8) (AT+4)
...
Better to make Jelly with just the pepper: (130:A182)

Stir Fry:
335 - 25 - 40 - (110:T121) - (C100:B200) = +60 (T+49) (B-40) (BT-51)
...
Better to make Pickles with just the kale: (270:A378)

Tom Kha Soup:
250 - 100 - (60:F75:A90) - 40 = +50 (F+35) (A+20)
...
Better to make Jelly with just the coconut: (250:A350)

Trout Soup:
100 - (65:F81:A97) - 15 = +20 (F+4) (A-12)
...
Better to make Algae Soup (*unless you have neither the F. or A. profession)
That's the breakdown of all profitable recipes. It's not nice to look at yet... My plan was to add them to the page, but after looking at the numbers I might just add a sentence or two to similar effect as those I wrote above the list.
In case my syntax is unclear here is a breakdown using the Bean Hotpot numbers as an example:
100 - 2 * (40:T44) = +20 (T+12)
Means "Sells for 100g; requires 2 beans that has a value of 40 (44 with the Tiller profession) = 20g profit (only 12g with T. profession)"
Given how small most profits are, and how bad value they are compared to other alternatives, is it really even interesting to know all these numbers?

AnorZaken (talk) 03:24, 21 July 2017 (BST)

The page is pretty large as is, I don't know how you would condense this. And, all the info is already right here, for anyone who wants the total breakdown. margotbean (talk) 04:49, 21 July 2017 (BST)
Yeah I agree. Only added three sentences about algaes and Sashimi, and how processing ingredients gives a much higher profit. AnorZaken (talk) 16:41, 21 July 2017 (BST)

Season delimiter syntax

Ok so multi-season syntax really should be unified. This page has three different alternatives already:

  • Crops section: we have Corn with "Summer Fall".
  • Foraged Goods: we have Common Mushroom with "Spring,Fall"
  • Fish section : we have Tuna with "Summer/Winter"

So what do we prefer? Whitespace, comma, or slash? (Slash would be least effort since that only requires changes to Corn and Common Mushroom.) AnorZaken (talk) 04:20, 21 July 2017 (BST)

Your choice. Have at it. margotbean (talk) 04:51, 21 July 2017 (BST)
To be honest I prefer commas, but I'm a bit busy today so slashes it is, at least for now. ^_^ (Maybe I'll change it later unless anyone prefers I didn't?) AnorZaken (talk) 15:20, 21 July 2017 (BST)

Data Anomaly in Stuffing

The listed buff duration is 5m39s. I wonder if this has a typo, but can't verify. Durations for other items tend to be 5m35s (Hashbrowns, Roots Platter) or 4m39s (Eggplant Parmesan, Trout Soup), and this one just appears to be an outlier and mixture of the others. Butterbur (talk) 19:56, 25 August 2017 (BST)

Also, Autumn's Bounty is 7m41s while Pumpkin Soup is 7m42s. Really? Butterbur (talk) 20:13, 25 August 2017 (BST)
Stuffing is indeed 5m35s, and Pumpkin Soup is 7m41s. The rest of the values are correct. margotbean (talk) 17:10, 26 August 2017 (BST)

Qi Seasoning

I added a basic section describing Qi Seasoning. I cooked every item with it, so I can fill the exact values in everywhere if needed, as there appear to be some off-by-one errors. Salad gives 91 health when 1.8*50 = 90, but they aren't consistent as other items with more than 50 health show the expected value for a multiple of 1.8, not higher. It's possible energy and / or price also have some like this, but I didn't check as it doesn't seem important. Agf (talk) 19:40, 29 December 2020 (UTC)

Also, I noticed the big recipes table is showing up a couple of sections down from where it's intended to be; I don't know how to fix that. It was doing it before my change. Agf (talk) 19:41, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
I've fixed the formatting, and the Qi Seasoning section looks great! Thank you! margotbean (talk) 19:42, 29 December 2020 (UTC)

Mini-Fridge

Some rudimentary/preliminary testing:

  • Player inventory 1st
  • Fridge 2nd
  • Mini-Fridge 3rd

From last slot to first, as with inventory and fridge.

Unsure exact order for multiple mini-fridges (could be reverse order of placement, proximity to stove, tile order top-bottom/left-right, or something else). More testing needed.

Easiest/cheapest way to test (both for research and regular gameplay): cook Sashimi 1 at a time with 1 fish per mini-fridge to determine order.

Separate page for drinks?

With the update 1.4 and 1.5, more drinks are added into Stardew valley. Shall we make a separate page for them, or make a redirect to this page? It will help if someone want to search information about them.
