Attendance at festivals is entirely optional and has no effect on [[friendship]] with [[villagers]]. Speaking to them at festivals (other than the [[Night Market]]) does not increase friendship points. Some festivals (like the Luau) do have activities where participation can affect friendship.
In a multiplayer game, every player who is present needs to enter the festival area to proceed (except for the [[Night Market]]). The same goes for leaving it, if it doesn't end automatically. Generally only the host can initiate further events.
