I use PNGGauntlet to compress image files. You should, too.
I am in the process of losslessly compressing every PNG on this wiki. So far, I have completed 511 images, reducing their combined size from 11,470,410 bytes to 7,426,851 bytes—a 35.3% reduction—without changing a single pixel.
Note that I strip out metadata, as it increases an image's file size with no visible benefit. If you need to view an image's old metadata, download the old version of the image and use a metadata viewer program (or temporarily revert the image to that version).
