Odd Catch

Just for the record, I caught a Sunfish in the Mountain Lake on the 2nd of Winter, a day it was snowing. (PC version 1.1 1.2 on Steam/Windows). Just how hard and fast are these seasonal, weather, and location rules for catching fish? Butterbur (talk) 04:28, 27 April 2017 (BST)

The data is pulled from Locations.xnb. Neither v1.11 or v1.2 lists Sunfish under the Mountain location. Are you sure it wasn't a Lingcod? margotbean (talk) 05:11, 27 April 2017 (BST)
Positive. It's in a chest right now. Actually, I restarted the day at one point, and the occurrence replicated. Sure surprised me!
Btw, I think I must be running 1.2 now. The game startup is slightly altered. For one thing, it flashes a new screen that briefly says "searching for game files" or some such thing. Startup also seems to take longer. I didn't remember a button I saw in one place either, and when I pressed it, it gave me a menu of languages to choose from. Sure seems like 1.2 to me, but it's odd to me that there was no mention of an upgrade on Steam. Not that I mind. Butterbur (talk) 09:02, 27 April 2017 (BST)
Further confirmation: the game accepted the Sunfish as the Community Center donation. Butterbur (talk) 07:48, 7 May 2017 (BST)

I've got a notion about this. Every game day, I make a copy of the save files so that I compile a running history of the game. If I wonder about the game's state, or have a question, I can then re-copy it over to the active folder and rerun from that point. Very useful in many ways.

So, if I remember correctly, I was doing just that, rerunning a day in Spring. As it happens, that day had been saved by game v1.1, but was now rerun by v1.2. When I finished, I took the new 1.2 option Exit to Title. Then, under the hood, I copied over the game files from my current day in Winter, which (if it matters) had been saved as a v1.2 file. I then returned to the game window and pressed load, where it found the winter day, and then I loaded it. It was during this run that I caught the sunfish. When I caught it again on another run, I may still not have exited the game window all the way to Windows, but continued on merely through Exit to Title. It's a real stretch, perhaps, but I wonder if there was some residual data or table that the game held onto from the spring day, and used later in the winter days. Initializations can be very tricky things, and I have seen a share of amazing results from them in my time. And this v1.2 is the first time it's been done this way in Stardew Valley, so a clandestine bug might have sneaked in. (They really do have great sneaky skills!) Stretch or no, it's got to be just as big a stretch for a sunfish to have made its way into winter by some other means.

But as you can see, I really can't explain it in the least. Butterbur (talk) 07:48, 7 May 2017 (BST)

Sunfish First Fish

For those wondering why their first fish is always usually a sunfish, there is a relevant discussion/explanation here: https://community.playstarbound.com/threads/sunfish-first-fish.142003/

I never did get it as the first fish all the time, only sometimes. And I haven't got it as first fish since v1.4 came out. I suspect there was a change, making the article's note obsolete. Perhaps it belongs in History? Butterbur (talk) 17:11, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
The discussion linked to is still valid. The sunfish is not the first fish 100% of the time, as it says in the discussion. The code hasn't changed, you can see for yourself by looking at StardewValley.GameLocation.getFIsh(), as it says in the discussion. margotbean (talk) 17:23, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
Ok. Discussions sometimes go out of date too, so I thought it good to verify. Thanks! Butterbur (talk) 17:53, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
Also, I can confirm in-game: I landed a sunfish at the beach after moving to v1.4. Nebulous Maestress (talk) 16:04, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
