Happy new year! How can the community support you?

Happy new year!

I wanted context for my questions about edits, and in doing so realized just how much time you're constantly putting into this wiki to make it the resource so many people rely on. It's incredible. I think there are many people who'd love to help so you're not so overwhelmed, but we just don't know how to follow the guidelines you've created over the years by putting in hundreds and even thousands of hours of work.

What can the community do to support you? How can we help without accidentally causing problems? Would a page about how to make edits in the Stardew Valley Wiki be a good starting point? A thread on the reddit community? A page listing desired information, and another page volunteering contributions? A review process? More prominent placement of discussions about formatting and settled choices? Finding another dedicated volunteer to help comb through code or create scripts to update many pages at once?

It's admirable you've done so much alone, but we want to help in this hopefully better new year. :)

Thank you, and Happy New Year to you as well!
There is a quick-start guide located at Help:Editing. What it doesn't say (yet) is that changes to the structure of the wiki, especially changes that would need to be carried out in the other 11 languages should be discussed before being implemented. This is on my "to do" list, but I need the language/wording to be right, and this takes some time. Of course, the trial-and-error method you and I have engaged in isn't ideal either, so I should get on that.
We definitely need code-divers and people who can read the unpacked content files to add missing information to pages. I couldn't even begin to compile a list of those changes needed, there are so many!
One thing that can be done by anyone is to add Leo to the gifting tables on existing pages. That doesn't require anyting but perhaps some in-game testing, and use of the existing pages List of All Gifts and Leo.
Some of the suggestions you made are being worked on, but I don't have the power to implement them at this time. For now, we have to muddle through with what we have.
I appreciate very much your desire to help, and your positive attitude amidst this chaos! margotbean (talk) 19:14, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
I would like to help by code-diving! I currently have a small script that produces villager schedules, though it doesn't specify anything more than what map they're in at what time. Is there any place for discussion about what specifically is needed/what sorts of scripts would be helpful? Minkee (talk) 20:01, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
Hello Minkee! What you've been doing so far is great! I think the individual villagers' talk pages are the place to discuss anything you have questions about. Otherwise, you seem to be doing fine.
My only advice is to check the version history of the villager's page to see if the schedule has been updated recently, to avoid duplicate work. Some villagers' schedules haven't been updated since 2016, I think, while others are completely up-to-date. (Maybe :D)
The real issues are villagers like Sebastian and Abigail, whose schedules depend on how many hearts you have with them. Leo's schedule also seems to depend on how many hearts you have with Penny and Sam, for some reason. If you can unravel that, that would be a miracle. Best of luck, and let me know if you have any more questions! margotbean (talk) 20:19, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
I think a major problem is visibility. There's nothing on most of the talk pages, so most would-be editors will assume that anything they put there won't be seen. And even putting a link on the homepage isn't very visible if it's below the fold, especially because most people don't return to the homepage once they've found the page they want. I suggest a prominent link in the side bar labeled "how to help the wiki." I am certain that would get attention and more volunteers. :)

FireAgate (talk) 21:08, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

I agree completely! That is one of the changes I've proposed, but don't have the power to implement at this time. I will do what I can to push things along. margotbean (talk) 21:18, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

Spoiler and Stub Tags question

Hi Margot, happy new year! I've been seeing you adding things I've missed to things, and I've been looking for a chance to say thanks for that. Good catches!

I saw a question earlier about whether spoiler tags should be included for having added mention of the Cooking Kit, and the verdict at that time was that it was minor enough that it wasn't worth it to add spoiler tags that would need to be manually removed in large quantities later. Should I be adding spoiler tags still to the new 1.5 furniture? They're a lot of pages, and while on the one hand they are new content, it's all also stuff you'll have to go in and take the spoilers off later, too.

On that note, there have been times when I know I'm making a page and I have enough info to get things started, but not enough to finish things. Would these be appropriate to mark with a stub as a sort of 'help these need finishing touches', or are stubs strictly something mods handle? Is there some standard way to indicate 'help I know this needs finishing in an ideal world'? I've been improving so far, and it seems to have worked out. Thanks!! Polk (talk) 19:17, 2 January 2021 (UTC)

Happy New Year, Polk! Anyone can mark a page as a stub, and if you have enough info to create a page but not all info, then please create it and mark it as a stub for the missing info. At this point I'm going to say "no" on adding spoiler tags to individual furniture pages. It's going to take hours to remove them all, and furniture isn't at the top of the list of spoilers that might ruin gameplay. As long as the history section says they were added in v1.5, console and mobile users will know they can't obtain the items.
You're doing great, and I appreciate it, thank you very much! margotbean (talk) 19:22, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
Ok! Good to know, I'll keep this in mind. And sounds good! Btw if you need a hand for removing spoiler tags when it comes to it (and if this is something we can help with), I'd be down for helping. Polk (talk) 20:27, 2 January 2021 (UTC)

Geode Return trivia

Hi, I saw you removed my trivia about the returns on geodes. Could I get clarification on what you meant by "unexplained trivia"? If I fix whatever issue you saw, could this trivia be re-added? -PancakeIdentity (talk) 23:02, 2 January 2021 (UTC)

What page, please? margotbean (talk) 23:03, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
Geode, Frozen Geode, Magma Geode, and Omni Geode. -PancakeIdentity (talk) 23:06, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
Aah, yes, please provide the calculation used to arrive at the numbers. Basically, the simplest mathematical proof or evidence you can give to support the claim(s). margotbean (talk) 23:10, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
Would "By multiplying the sell price of each item by the chance to obtain it, and adding those products together, you can find the average profit of breaking open a single geode. Geodes have an average return of [...]" suffice? -PancakeIdentity (talk) 00:21, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
Yes, yes it would. Thank you very much! margotbean (talk) 00:23, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

Ring Combinations

Hello, I saw that you removed my contributions regarding ring combinations, and useful rings for obtaining other items. They were removed with the note "Avoid Recommendations".

  1. Where are the rules for making contributions
  2. Couldn't the content be modified rather than wholesale removed?

--Omgkittens (talk) 20:44, 9 January 2021 (UTC)

Please see Help:Editing for instructions on advice giving and using objective language. Thanks, margotbean (talk) 19:09, 10 January 2021 (UTC)

New Legendary Fish

Hello Margotbean! I saw that you deleted the posts of the new legendary fish for having almost no info about them, I already captured the new 5 legendary fish and I see that they are exactly the same as their original version so I think that a section should be created on the page of each legendary fish where it is done mention of its "new version" with its respective description and image, saying that it shares the fishing place, the same prices and healing effects as the original with the exception that they are available all day and only during the period of the quest "Extended Family" or duplicate the page of each legendary fish but changing the time/season/weather to any, change the image, the description and obviously the title of the page. Also the healing effects of the Legend fish are wrong, it has 5 when it should be 4 but I think it is a rounding error but I do not know how the rounding is modified or why that happens or if the normal quality stats are wrong. TheLuckAGER (talk) 18:24, 10 January 2021 (UTC)

If everything is the same (other than time), then I agree, the fish don't need their own pages. How much Fishing XP do they give? Is it the same? (Is it a moot point, because by the time you get the quest, you're almost certainly at level 10 fishing?) For now, I think a section on existing pages would be fine, and if we discover that the fish need their own page because of too many differences from the original, we can create those pages. We can create redirect pages from the names of the new fish to the existing pages. margotbean (talk) 19:08, 10 January 2021 (UTC)
Okay, I'll work on it. I'm already at level 10 but I don't know if there is any mod or some way to see how much exp they give for fishing, if you know of a mod or method I will gladly try to catch them again!.TheLuckAGER (talk) 19:56, 10 January 2021 (UTC)
I think I've used UI Info Suite to see XP increases before. I didn't care to keep it after testing, but it's a popular mod, and I think it will do the job.
Otherwise, someone would have to start a new save, and get to Ginger Island and accept the quest, but stay at a low fishing level. Then they could check the save file for XP increases each night. That would be the more difficult and cumbersome route, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it! margotbean (talk) 18:26, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
The stats of the legend fish are wrong, I have checked and what heals in basic quality is 224, but the page says 225, as healing and recovered energy are affected by "edibility" I can not fix it TheLuckAGER (talk) 16:22, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

Improving Multiplayer Section

Hey there, I want to improve the Multiplayer page a little bit. It's missing some commands currently, as well as a good bit of other multiplayer-useful information. I had updated them, but it seems they were lost during the outages in the transfer.

I was also considering uploading the LooseSprites\emojis.png chat Emojis (similar to the Modding:Object data/Sprites page) for referencing, since you can use them in chat by typing [3], [11], etc.

Where do you think might be the best place to put the sprite sheet at on the wiki, if at all? Multiplayer/Emojis, maybe?

TheElm (talk) 22:08, 13 January 2021 (UTC)

I think Multiplayer/Emojis would be a fine place for them. margotbean (talk) 00:21, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

Infoboxes

Hey! My apologies for going wild on the Seeds/Furniture infoboxes and creating extra work, did not realize the implications that had for other languages. Efarn (talk) 21:38, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

It's no problem at all, how would you have known? I've copied the seedbox changes to all languages, but going to hold off on furniture till we have all sources nailed down. (It's been suggested to add Pierre's shops at festivals as well). Cheers!! margotbean (talk) 06:18, 15 January 2021 (UTC)

Wiki Membership

Hi Margotbean, I'm a bit new here, but I'm making some changes that I think are good (excluding the first one, you might remember) but to get to the point, I'm here because I went to the Stardew Valley Discord server and asked this question and a Mod / Admin named Jade told me that he or she didn't think anyone would know the answer there, and again, getting to the point, I was asking if anyone knew if there is some kind of Membership that you earn when you have some active time on the wiki so you don't you have to wait for a moderator to review your changes, if there is one, how do you get it (something more specific than spending more time on the wiki), what is your answer always; thanks for taking the time to read this. Jadop (talk) 08:40 pm, 20 Junuary 2021 (UTC+0)

New accounts are somewheat limited, as detailed in Help:Editing. Since the purpose is to combat vandalism, the details are purposefully left vague. There is no other kind of membership or achievement system, nor a system to let you know your edits were "approved." margotbean (talk) 04:02, 21 January 2021 (UTC)

Redirection pages

Hey! I've seen that you've corrected links to redirection pages into direct links, and I was wondering why. Isn't it a point to have redirection pages? ClemNad (talk) 11:38, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
