The current color of the font looks too light in my opinion. Would it be okay if I removed that associated code to make it more legible? -- Kapra (talk) 01:22, 2 March 2016 (EST)

Geneva or Times New Roman?

Currently, this template uses font-family: Geneva; for the main text of the quote.

Problem is, this declaration has no fallback fonts. So it shows completely different fonts to readers, depending on whether they have Geneva installed or not.

Since Geneva is typically on Apple systems only, PC and Android readers are probably seeing their browser default font — Times New Roman, likely. This means providing fallback fonts, e.g. font-family: Geneva,Tahoma,Verdana,sans-serif;, is a noticeable change for them.

On the other hand, I could change it to Times-like fonts. But then everyone using Macs or iPhones would notice the new font, because they are currently seeing Geneva.

Bit of a rock and a hard place. Which way does everyone prefer?

Option 1: What Mac and iPhone now see, “Geneva, Tahoma, Verdana, sans-serif. ABC xyz 123.”Option 2: What PC and Android now see, “Times New Roman, Times, Georgia, serif. ABC xyz 123.”

Hmm, I looked through the history, and I think I see where the miscommunication was. The Mac/iPhone user with Geneva used 1em font size, and (sorry if I'm intruding!) I think you see it in Times which, I think you noticed correctly, is small and hard to read at 1em italic. Perhaps as a compromise, use the Geneva font stack so the template doesn't have to guess which of two different fonts of unequal sizes everybody sees, but revert the font size so it isn't huge for PC/Android?Compromise: Geneva font stack at normal size, “Geneva, Tahoma, Verdana, sans-serif. Well... double hmm! I did not realize that Geneva was a sans-serif font! (I think I assumed it was a proprietary form of Georgia for some reason...)

You guessed correctly, I am viewing Times New Roman on a PC. I can't believe no one said anything before this, I changed the font size to 1.1em months ago...

I think the best solution would be to use web fonts, which would require the Admin to change the stylesheet. Ideally, the wiki would detect the device and use sans-serif for Apple products and serif for others. That way, no one sees a sudden major font change.

Let me elevate this to the Admin, and let's wait for his input, all right? I don't want Apple users to suffer with a HUGE font any longer, but at the same time, sans-serif quotes look hideous to me. Let's see if we can work out something pleasing to all. I'll message Katzeus (the Admin) today, but he might not see the message till Monday. A webfont could do it, but Tahoma is pretty darn close to Geneva. And since pretty much everyone has Tahoma these days, might even skip Verdana: font-family: Geneva,Tahoma,sans-serif;. Rigel Kent (talk) 04:33, 10 July 2017 (BST)

Sorry I'm just getting caught up on this. I think we should actually try to make both platforms have serif fonts - that's what I think the design was for PC and what was the intended design for both (I didn't actually make the original template). Mac/iOS users may see a font-change, but less worried about maintaining consistency with them then design consistency across platforms. What do you both think? I was always pro-serif for italicized text. From what I can find on the web, Georgia & Times New Roman are common to all devices. I've tested Georgia and TNR at 1.1em, and both look fine to me. margotbean (talk) 19:49, 12 July 2017 (BST)
